what i wound up doing, eventually, was a wipe and clean
reinstall.

i did check out the dependency thing, and did

	apt-get --purge remove xfree86-common

and still hadta go thru the dependency thing by hand,
which is dangerous; some of the things that look like they're
X-relevant only, are actually used in other (non-X) functions,
so exercise caution and watch for the "but this-and-that
depend on the widget you're trying to zap" messages...
