/home owner and group changed

	I don't know how but all the directories and files in my /home
	directory changed group and ownership.  They were listed as -
	1000 1000
	I don't have a backup and don't remember each group and owner.
	I wasn't allowed to change the group.  I got the following error
	when I tried -
	invalid group name 'kent'

	This is what I did to "fix" this -
	addgroup kent 
	which added - kent:x:102: to /etc/group

	ran - chown -R kent.kent kent 
	in my home directory.

	My questions: what could cause my /home directory to change like
	this and is my "fix" appropriate?
