X is dead

Hi People

I've been having problems with X 4.0 in woody but I'm unsure what's causing
it (so I'm unable to track it to a specific package and file a bug report).

The problem is when X is started (usually I use gdm but the problem also
occurs when using xinit directly or through startx) it makes the terminal
flash about 5 or 6 times and then stops. If I'm using gdm, it will generally
attempt to start X again a few minutes later resulting in periods of
uninterrupted terminal use and then brief spurts of terminal flashing which
won't accept user input. This is of course solved by stoping gdm.

So, what I'm asking is, what is likely to be the offending package in this
case? Is this problem known and is there a quick workaround?

I suppose it may help to point out that my video card is an S3 virge.

Could any replies please be directed to rmarlow@tartarus.uwa.edu.au (I'm
not subscribed to this mailing list).
