I made that mistake once - qualify_domain was:
qualify_domain = creighton.edu
rather than
qualify_domain = localhost <or fury.brutsche.com>
and thus messages meant for me (root@localhost) went to
root@creighton.edu.

Exactly what I have.

Beyond qualify_domain and local_domains, I can't think of anything that
would cause this.
Are you able to post your exim.conf?
