you can run crontab -e as user sunkcost, and put
5,10,15 * * * * sunkcost /bin/tar -cf /home/sunkcost/test.tar /home/sunkcost/test.txt
there
if this doesn't work, there's probably something wrong with cron, read the logs
(/var/log/syslog for me), or try adding something very simple, like
* * * * * /usr/bin/touch /tmp/cron_ran
with crontab -e in root's or sunkcost's crontab
if you want to edit a user's crontab, always use crontab -e, /etc/cron.d is
mainly meant for packages to install cron entries.
