check the BIOS configuration, many BIOSes allow you to configure the
`mode' of disks in order of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.  if the 3rd disk is
configured in say `standard CHS' mode, and the first disk is
configured in LBA mode then a disk partitioned when attached as the
3rd disk won't work as the first disk unless you change the settings
to CHS from LBA (in this example).  

at least that is my experience on the matter, i had a disk in a
machine configured to CHS mode and partitioned that way (by linux
fdisk) later the BIOS got reset and it put the disk into LBA mode and
LILO quit working.  changing the BIOS back to CHS mode fixed it.

IOW the PC BIOS/partition table sucks.
