I thought the Official Debian Way(tm) was to use 'update-rc.d' to do
that for you, but I decided not to recommend that method because a) I've
never used it myself, and b) a newbie might have trouble with it and
just uninstalling xdm would be simpler.

I'm not sure about the tulip, but some network card drivers in the 2.2
kernel are hopelessly out of date, due to conflicts between Linus and
Donald Becker (writer of most of the network card drivers) about
Donald's code submission habits. I have a feeling that the tulip is one
of the outdated drivers, which would explain the inclusion of the driver
with the card. You can probably also download the latest drivers from
Donald's own site, whereever that is.
