$ dpkg -S md5sum
dpkg: /usr/bin/md5sum
dpkg: /usr/share/man/ja/man1/md5sum.1.gz
dpkg: /usr/share/man/man1/md5sum.1.gz

So we DO have it as a deb file, it should already be present on your system 
since it's marked "required?!" Maybe you accidentially removed it, so try re-
installing it...
