More recent versions of lilo can override this limit.

The install CD comes with a kernel, and lilo ! At the prompt, type some
magic command like: "linux root=/dev/xxxx"
if your disk is primary master IDE, and linux on the 4th partition, xxxx=hda4
you get the picture.
