cannot start ALSA

I compiled the ALSA modules but this is what happens when I run alsaconf:

Starting sound driver:  (ens1371)
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%   x  
The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.               x  
Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably                x  
not detected correctly.    

I am using Potato with kernel 2.4.0 test5
What am I doing wrong?
