Newbie Mouse Problem

I've just installed Debian 2.0.34 and I can't get my
Mouse Systems PS/2 mouse to work. I've spent much of
the day today searching the archives but nothing I read
there seems to help. Here's the what I've been able to
find out about the problem

When I look at the login messages in /var/log/messages,
I don't see any message that a mouse is detected, but the
psaux module is loaded.

In /proc/devices there is no mention of a mouse, unless,
Would it be pty?

In /proc/interrupts there is no mention of the IRQ 12 that
the mouse needs.

I have a link /dev/mouse->psaux

When I try to run gpm or gpmconfig I get an error message
"operation not supported by device".

This is what's in the file /etc/gpm.conf:
device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
type=ps2
append="-l \"a-zA-Z0-9_.:~/\300-\326\330-\366\370-\377\""

Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance
