There are many programs that do this.  There's a gnome panel applet
called "Mail check" of all things that runs in the gnome panel. It uses
[possibly] animated images to indicate new mail.  You can also launch
your mail app by clicking on the panel applet.  There an "epplet" for
Enlightenment which essentiall does the same thing.  There old tried and
true Xbiff.  There's the countmail "game" in bsdgames (reminiscent of
Sesame Street...).  There's the $MAILCHECK environment variable in bash.
After a specified amount of time it checks for new mail, if there's new
mail, you're notified next time you hit enter at a bash prompt (or after
exiting programs running in bash) with "You have mail in /var/spool/..."
I think there's a kbdleds program that'll flash specified keyboard leds
to indicate new mail -- haven't played with it.

So, you now have many options...
