afpd == AppleTalk Filing Protocol daemon -- exports parts of your
filesystem so MacOS users can mount them as AppleShare volumes. it is
responsible for littering .AppleDouble garbage all over the place.

papd == Proprietary AppleTalk Printing daemon -- daemon that allows
MacOS users to print to your machine, where the print requests are
either sent proprietary AppleTalk printers or handed over to lpr.

(`p' does not actually stand for `proprietary' but its still fits very
well, as would `i' for `incompatible' ;-))

rootshell waiting to happen. or did they ever rewrite proftpd?

yup, also probably accompanied by atalkd, if so get rid of it unless
you cannot live without appletalk, it spews tons of useless crap all
over the LAN. (the definition of Appletalk)
