Yes, I know (mine is set to german, but this one only set the locales
for the GNOME applications, not for gdm itself).

OK, I see, when logged in as root, bash sets the locale, then when I
restart gdm, gdm gets the locale too.

But the problem remains: how to set the locale before the login
process starts gdm initially?
