one machine, two IP addresses?

I usually dial-up to my ISP and get an assigned IP address for the session.
I am thinking of connecting my ethernet card to a network, so I might have two connections at once.

My understanding is that the IP address comes from the ethernet card (hmm... but then it couldn't be assigned in a local network, so probably this is wrong..). At any rate, is there a problem with the machine doing both networks at once?

Thanks.
