I had success using unzip on a self-extracting file e.g.:

$unzip PK250DOS.EXE
Archive:  PK250DOS.EXE
  inflating: ADDENDUM.TXT
  inflating: HINTS.TXT
... snipped.

Maybe Chris' suggestion that in your case it might not be a zipped file is
right.
