I use three ways quite a bit:
* FTP
* NFS
* SMB (aka Windows file sharing)
If you're just getting into networking FTP will be the easiest.

You can telnet into Win98 only if Windows is running a telnet daemon.
Take my advice and don't try it - Windows 9x sucks for that sort of thing
(being a server).

That means the Windows machine refused the connection, mostly because
there wan't anything that could respond.
