This is not the other OS you must know, there's a method which IMHO is
a little bit smarter :)
try running
/etc/init.d/xdm restart
as root.
not from within X might be an idea :)
you can switch to your virtual consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F1 trough
F6. Back again with Alt+F7.
the
/etc/init.d/<file> start|stop|reload|restart.....
method works for many other things too, like the inetd, the lpd, et
alii.
