gnome is an enviornment, a set of programs and libraries to make a
graphical enviornment, it does not manage windows by itself, enlightnement
is a window manager, typically the default that runs with GNOME on most
systems, but you can use another window manager afterstep, kde(which uses
kwm as the window manager, KDE is also a enviornment for
developers/users), windowmaker, xfce etc.. you can't run the gnome
enviornment with all windowmanagers some are not (fully/at all) compadible
with each other(either 'gnome compliant or 'kde compliant'), i use
afterstep(www.afterstep.org) for my windowmanager of choice.
