I appreciate the response.

The "/dev/MAKEDEV update" didn't result in anything different.

The /etc/modutils/alias file did not have those entries, so I added them; then I did
a "update-modules". Again, no difference in the results.

Before and after these changes I could cat things to /dev/dsp as root or a normal
user, but the results were less than optimal; sometimes just squeals, sometime almost
intelligible sound.
