I'd think you'd only have to set it once in gnome-control (at least that
works here). You might try running the xscreensaver-demo which'll write
a ~/.xscreensaver which you can edit. You can place this command in your
.xsession file:

if [ -f /usr/bin/X11/xscreensaver ]; then
        /usr/bin/X11/xscreensaver -no-splash &
fi
