keyboard in console

Greetings:
I got two problems:
One, with my keyboard in console mode. The keyboard has letters switched every which way ("q" is "a", "w" is "z", etc.) I didn't seem to have problems prior to downloading console-tool, etc in updating unstable.Tried removing and re-installing but no go. X-windows keyboard has no problems. It seems to be the keyboard map for console (non-Xwindows) that's the problem.
Two, menus in windowmanagers are incomplete and non-functional. Some of my applications are not listed. Netscape, for instance doesn't start, not even using "/usr/X11R6/bin/netscape" at the commandline.
Any help on these two problems would be appreciated.
