No, it can be any folder you choose, but you might want to make sure
you keep them organized.

usually at this point, you login as root (with the su command) and
then run 'make install'. It should place everything where it needs
to be. After that you should be able to do the remaining steps
below.
Most files that need to be compiled installed run through these same
three steps (configure, make, make install).

If the previous step worked out, then you should have a man page
now.

I can't really help you here. I don't know much about the boot
process myself. There are a bunch of rc.# directories and the init.d
directory in the /etc directory that get ran at bootup.
