What printer package are you using? Are you using something like apsfilter
or magicfilter? The problem you are describing seems to have somthing to
do with dos vs linuix termination. I remember reading about it in the
printing howto and also experiencing it. 

Try removing the printer package and reinstalling it so you can see give
it the correct options for your printer or run the config script for your
package.
