What type of monitor and video card do you have?
Have you run XF86Setup, and if so, at the end of the setup did it
say that you had a working server?
If you've tried XF86Setup, have you tried xf86config, and
vice-versa? (Notice capitalization.)
What does the first line of /etc/X11/XServer say?
