Since most have concentrated on how to stop xdm (which, BTW, there have
been innumerable threads about in the past), i'll show how to reconfigure
X without a GUI.

If you can't find a backup, you could always use the console-based
xf86config. Yes, it takes a little bit more knowledge, and for some of the
mode advanced features you have to uncomment lines in the generated
XF86Config by hand, but it's nice if you don't want to mess with a gui
when configuring your gui...
