OK, yet another stupid question. THis may have already been anwered, but
I didn't read the early messages in this thread. How are you starting X?
If you're logging in and running startx, then .xsession isn't the right
script; you want .xinitrc. If you're using xdx (wdm, kdm, gdm, whatever)
then you want .xsession.
