Thanks, to you and everyone else who answered. It turns out that there
is already a bug report for this (I had assumed it was a problem with my
configuration--not a bug). XEmacs is trying to access the Network Audio
System. The workaround is to create the /tmp/.sockets/audio0 file, as
several people suggested, or to install the 'nas' package.
