problems with startx

Hi,

I'm having some problems with startx: If I log in and type startx, X starts
but doesn't start the window
manager. If I ctrl-alt-backspace out of that, here's the messages that
startx spews:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------

_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: mkdir(/tmp/.X11-unix) failed, errno =
17
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for local
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
 problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

If I su and rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix, and then exit the su, then I can type
startx and everything is fine -- at least
until I logout or reboot.

Here's an ls of the contents of /tmp before I delete /tmp.X11-unix:

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
