Blocking the console? You mean you can't use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill
the X server or use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to another VT?

gnome-session has been _tremendously_ buggy in my experience. Stay away from it
and manually launch panel and your WM from your .xsession file.

All of the display managers I've used (wdm, xdm, kdm, and gdm), will respect
the .xsession file in a user's home directory and execute it upon logon.
