Are you using kernel 2.2?  The diald in slink is not compatible with
kernel 2.2.  There is a package of diald 0.99 which fixes these problems
in potato.

diald sets up everything itself.  You might have problems if you have a
default route set up, but other than that you should only need to set up
the local network and any masquerading in /etc/init.d/network.
