Make that /dev/ttyS1 .  Case matters.

Also, if in the pppconfig "Provider Name" screen you changed the defaullt
name 'provider' to something else you must tell pon about it.  For example,
if you replaced 'provider' with 'myisp' you must type 'pon myisp'.

Yes.  Pppd is not very clever.  Some configuration errors confuse it into
believing that ppp support is missing from the kernel.
