This is what we need to tackle first, since you need to compile a kernel
to get sound support.

First, make sure you have all the required files. The kernel-source-*
packages all depend on the absolutely required packages you'll need. Also,
if you have a intel platform you'll need the bin86 package as mentioned in
the text. After instalkling the source (whether from a kernel-source
package or from kernel.org) you should check the Documentation/Changes
file for more files to make sure you have.

Finally, get the kernel-package package, it'll compile the kernel and make
.debs for you. Read section 11 of the Debian FAQ for more info.

If none of that helps, let us know what you did and what error messages
you're getting.
