Maybe you didn't run apt-get update? You also _have_ to use "update"
in dselect if you use it. apt-get update is not enough.
$ apt-cache showpkg wmaker
Package: wmaker
Versions: 0.53.0-2(/var/state/apt/lists/ftp1.us.debian.org_debian_dists_potato_main_binary-i386_Packages)(/var/lib/dpkg/status),
[...]
I have the following line in sources.list
deb http://ftp1.us.debian.org/debian potato main contrib non-free
