i too have had wmaker 0.53.0 for quite a while.

They changed the layout of unstable on non-US. Try this in sources.list:
deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free

(that last gives errors if i try to install through dselect, but it reads
the Packages file fine. It's only there so i don't have "Obsolete/local"
lines for kernel packages and pine.)
