Are you sure this is from the same run?

I would have guessed that the "Connection failed" is caused by exim
not listening to the smtp port.

Does "telnet localhost smtp" give you the greeting?

What does you .fetchmailrc look like? Do you have the "is s2193893
here" part in there?
