First have a look what less [+-]r says. Use something like:
cat <your file> | perl -e ' while(<>){ s/\x82//g; print; } ' > cleaned.file
(sorry I don't have my perl notes handy).
I guess there is a way to trick latex to display a \lbar (see \hbar).
