Re: Why not Debian? (real-time proto with linux!)

We use RedHat internally and I am the admin. I have been using linux
since '96 and started 'playing' with Slackware before moving onto
RedHat in the 5.x series. I am a programmer, but I have trasmogrified
into a programmer/sysadmin and have setup everything that any
self-respecting linux based company would want. We use DNS, ftp, WWW,
FireWalling, NNTP, SMTP, and POP. I recently setup a Sybase box that
is connected to, by windows clients. We also have a couple of 486's
doing various routing, and at one point I had a router running IPX
accross two interfaces and IP across all three. We run Samba on a
RAID-5 box and the only problem it has had so far, was when the UPS to
which it is connected too failed, when we had a power outage. I
advised using redhat because of its more 'finished' and 'packaged' and
'commercial' image and I felt that the company would more likely go
for it. At first when everyone was skeptical, it helped their faith
somewhat ... but now they are convinced that linux is indeed a 'good'
thing. We need to be up 24/7 and are forced to have a few NT machines
kicking about. So they have something to gauge its ability by ;)

To get to the point, after using Redhat like I have never used it
before (that is administrating a business network as opposed to
playing with my LAN at home) I have come to the conclusion that debian
is far more suited to the task, and I am slowly going to start moving
machines over to debian (if I can get hold of the blasted thing ;).

So why is it so good?

1. You are guaranteed that the software you find within the 'debian
distribtion is *free* (unlike some packages with other
    distributions.

2. The GNU tools are *much* more up-to-date

3. Its package management is superior to other package management
    formats IMHO.

4. It seems to be more sensible, with regards to security and I am
constantly upgrading software that comes with another
distribution, although all distribtions are plagued by such
    problems.

I am not an exprerienced admin and setting up sendmail was not what I
would call fun but debian will make my job easier.

Well whatever distro you do decide to use welcome to 'Linux Land'
enjoy your stay :)
