dpkg errors/stuck in loop!

Have a catch22 type problem with dpkg. Trying to update G++, GOBJC, egcc,
binutils I get the following errors, am not able to remove, install, purge
configure, or reinstall the packages.

--audit shows packages, --force-depends and --force-bad-path are no help.

Suspect a mangled database or another dependency problem.
Any Ideas???

Another problem, modem/serial port in 2.2.2 is locked up,
no /var/lock/LCK..ttyS1 but setserial-bg /dev/ttyS? produces
device not available error. Does not occur with 2.0.36.
/proc/interrupts,devices,ports gives no clues to the problem.
Will not accept any configurations from setserial once the
system has booted. As the kernel is loading messages are returned
from setserial showing the port is alive.

Any suggestions were to look for the problem?

TIA, Mike
