Q: What lets xvidtune know what the hardware limits are ?
A: It's the XFree86 configuration file; it contains a section
where upper and lower bounds for hsync and vsync are defined.
This is freely configurable (at your monitor's risk, of course)
to get fewer complaints from the X server and xvidtune.

In case your RAM exceeds 64M you have to tell the kernel the actual
RAM size before it is started.
This is done with a kernel commandline par "mem=96m".
For example if you boot using LILO you should add the line
append "mem=96m"
to the image section belonging to your linux kernel in
"/etc/lilo.conf" and run lilo.
(cf. the boot-prompt HOWTO (below /usr/doc/ ) and the very good doc
that comes with LILO)
