Re: Should be installing Linux soon. Questions.

Hello,

You realise that entire volumes have been written on that topic? :-)

A desktop environment is a bunch of X programs that are designed to work well
together. Typically, there's some sort of button-bar for launching the
individual pieces (file browser, mail program, whatever else is there). To
complete the look'n'feel, some desktop environments include their own window
manager.

A window manager is a program that provides title bars to windows, so that you
can move them, resize them, iconify them etc. It also provides menus on the
"desktop" and on the title bars.

Theoretically, windows come without title bars. In practice, you always have a
window manager running, so you almost never see that. The only time I've seen
it is when I quit out of one window manager and start another (you can do that
while applications are running).

A spell checker is fairly standard in Linux. Debian definitely has one (for
quite a few languages).

Better still - you can have Linux show up in the network neighborhood. I'm
using that here at home - my Linux computer shows up as T: on my Win95 box.
Let me know if you want any more details...
