You can't use pon as it will start pppd with the options in
/etc/ppp/peers/provider.  You can, however, use /etc/chatscripts/provider
instead of the connect script in /etc/diald.  Just put
	 connect "chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider"
in place of the standard connect line in /etc/diald/diald.options.

The ip-up scripts have nothing to do with pon.  They run whenever pppd
brings a ppp connection up.  Since diald calls pppd, the ip-up scripts get
run when diald brings the connection up.
