I faced a similar problem and solved it as follows.  In my environment
the HP printer was putting out a banner with small letters and a TRAILING
banner at that (useless).  I suppressed the trailing banner using the
utility available when telneted to the printer.  (My guess was that
other print drivers (e.g. from WinNT machines) were suppressing this
default banner and creating their own banner with big letters; as no
one has complained in about a year I seem to have been correct.)  I then
created my own banner page with a filtering script that also "bounces"
the print job from the default queue to the HP printer.  See details at:

This is a very ad-hoc solution!  Adapt it with caution to your enviroment
if you think it might apply.
