NIS/something equivalent + security

Hi!

I now have 3 debian machines that have to share login/passwords.
The straightaway solution is NIS, but I have some questions about it:
	1) Is it difficult to install / maintain?
	2) Will my ftp daemon work?
	3) Most important: security. Is it safe? Will I be able to keep my
shadow passwords?

If NIS is not a sensible solution, is there any other solution for
my problem? Boot up from NFS? Load /etc from NFS (locking+semaphore
problems)?

	TIA for your help!
