Tom, run xdpyinfo.  Look for it to tell you what resolution X is in.  You may
be in 320x4?? and that is why you have a weird look.  Try hitting ctrl-alt-+
(that is the control key, the alt key, and the plus sign), that should try and
use the next larger screen size.

Why not run the X based config?  It has an option for setting which size you
would like the screen to start in.
