I remember having that problem on one of the old KDE betas, but it was
gone in the 1.0 version.  Are you sure you're running the current version?

KFM is actually a couple different programs.  KFM itself causes the icons
to show up on your desktop and things like that.  Then there's kfmclient,
which is the actual window based file manager.  Kfm needs to be running in
order for kfmclient to work.  If kfm crashes, then you won't be able to
start a new client by selecting "home" from your K menu or something like
that.  See if kfm is actually running.  If it isn't, then try running
kfm & in an xterm, and then see if you can get a client to run.
