I think you will see that the first line in /etc/X11/Xserver reads
'/usr/bin/X11/XF86_NONE'. It should be replaced with something like
/usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA, /usr/bin/X11/XF86_S3, or some other X server
that matches your video card.
You can either do this manually, or rather than 'xf86config', try
'XF86Setup' to configure your X server from scratch. Much nicer.
(It comes with the 'xserver-vga' package. Even if your card is not
a plain VGA card, it is a good idea to install this package, as (1)
backup in case you change your video card, and (2) extra programs like
'XF86Setup').
