I once had one of these modems. there is a program for linux which can be
used to download the code natively.  Its called smdl and can be found at
sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/serialcomm/modem. you didn't specify which
model you use. Supposedly, this only works on a connection modem.
