I "discovered" postgresql a few months ago. There is a GUI frontent you
can use on X: pgaccess that makes it a lot easier to use.

Have a look at Lyx as a sort of compromise between a wordprocessor and
Latex. As far as spreadsheets go I recently saw a shareware one which
impresses me: XessLite. I has the ability to read .wk? and Excel file.
