ok, I double checked. The problem is related to the user' .Xresource.

There is a line that create the problem:
XTerm*geometry:		80x40

The "man xterm" command says:

  geometry (class Geometry)
               Specifies the preferred size and position  of  the
               VT102 window.

so what can be wrong?
